  2. Basic Information • Herpes is a virus • It is transmitted through sex • The full name of Herpes is Herpes simplex

  3. Symptoms – Male • Blisters on or near the penis • Pain while urinating • Penis swells painfully • High fever, severe headache and muscle aches • Scabbing blisters • Recurring blisters

  4. Symptoms – Female • Fluid-filled blisters over the external genitalia and inside the vagina • Pain while urinating • High fever, severe headache, and muscle aches • Recurring blisters

  5. Testing – Male • The blisters are swabbed with a cotton swab to be tested in a lab in different ways

  6. Testing – Female • The blisters are swabbed with a cotton swab and tested in a lab in a few different ways

  7. Treatment/Management • A drug called Acyclovin is used to shorten the period of pain • Acyclovin can also be used to prevent some outbreaks in severe cases

  8. If Left Untreated • If left untreated, Herpes causes recurring outbreaks of blisters in and around the genitalia • There is also a form of herpes that causes blisters to form in the mouth.

  9. Prevention • The only way to 100% prevent herpes is to be abstinent • Otherwise, use a condom
