BCBUA Clinics 2011 History of clinics • 1975, 1st BCBUA clinic ½ day all field work • 1982, classroom sessions introduced, full day clinics, instructors were top umpires, no formal training for instructors • 1986, instructor mentorship program started • 1988 first instructor clinic held in Surrey, Abe Shapiro lead instructor • 1992 National Caravan held in BC for 1st time (next one would not be until 2007) • 1994 BCBUA Instructor Clinic • 1999, new clinic format proposed and adopted • Level 1-2 clinic are to be split, UIC’s in charge of teaching basic rules to Level 1 and BCBUA trained instructors to lead Level 2 sessions and all field work • Evening sessions introduced • This program failed to be successful • 2000 BCBUA Instructor Clinic • 2005 BC sends 3 umpires to National Caravan in Moose Jaw Sask. for training in National Program • 2007 BC hosts National Caravan for first time in 15 years, 1st new BBC Master Course Instructor certified in BC since 1992 • 2008 BCBUA instructors clinic held • 2009 BC sends 6 instructors to National Caravan in Alberta • 2010 BCBUA introduces new clinic format mirroring the ideas from 1999 • 2011 BCBUA hosts Instructors Workshop at Superclinic

BCBUA Clinics 2011 New for 2011 • Level 1 and Level 2 Clinic are split into two separate and distinct teaching groups • No more combined Level 1-2 clinics • Level 1 clinics will be structured for 1st and 2nd year officials that will be working 60 foot base path baseball - 6 hours of instruction • Young students • Attention span • Time frames • Basic rules and simple mechanics to make them successful • Mentorship and role of UIC • Level 2 clinics will concentrate on 70 foot and above divisions, students should be at least 16 years old (not hard and fast rule though) – 7 ½ hours of instruction • Review of basic rules and mechanics from Level 1 • Introduce concepts of game management and more advanced mechanics • Utilize actual game video as teaching tool

BCBUA Clinics 2011 • Both Level 1 and 2 clinics can be offered as all evening sessions or as a full day clinics • Pros and Cons • Level 1: 4 1½ hour sessions, or full day session • BCBUA will only supply instructors for the above time frames • Can be a combination of the two evening and day, but total time can not exceed the guidelines (for reimbursement of instructors) • Level 2: 5 1½ Sessions or Full day Session or combination of both • Level 2 students are separate from level 1 • Different learning expectations • Different learning styles based on age appropriate materials
