Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) • U.S. DOE, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) NSO responsible for oversight • Located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV • Approximately 1,360 sq. miles of federally owned and controlledland surrounded by 4,500 sq. miles of federally owned and controlled Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR)

Historic Mission • From 1951 to 1992, the primary mission of the NNSS, formerly known as the Nevada Test Site, was to conduct nuclear and conventional explosives tests in connection with research and development of nuclear weapons • Environmental restoration activities began in 1989 to address environmental liabilities associated with nuclear weapons production and testing

Environmental Management (EM) • Characterization and clean-up activities at radioactive and non-radioactive contaminated sites (Environmental Restoration) • Activities focus on groundwater, soil, and on-site infrastructure contamination from historic nuclear testing • Radioactive andhazardous waste management and disposal • Environmental planning, compliance, and monitoring

NSO EM Prime Contractors • National Security Technologies, LLC (NSTec) • Remediation • Waste management • Non-EM work • Defense experimentation and Stockpile Stewardship • Homeland Security and defense applications • Navarro-Intera, LLC (N-I) • Corrective action investigations • Remediation • Groundwater modeling

Environmental Restoration (ER) • Comprised of three operations • Industrial Sites • Soils • Underground Test Area (UGTA) • Cleanup sites (referred to as Corrective Action Sites [CASs]) are grouped into Corrective Action Units (CAUs) based on contamination,location, and other technical characteristics • State of Nevada oversight provided under the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO) K:\Public-Affairs\Public Affairs Common Web\Photos\54491 - CAU 484 Looking south - excavation, digging in south wall.jpg

  7. Industrial Sites • Investigation, characterization, and remediation of 1,710 sites on the NNSS and NTTR (including the Tonopah Test Range [TTR]) at facilities used in support of nuclear testing • Remediation of contaminated sites includes leach fields, sumps, disposal wells, tanks, landfills, ordnance sites, and decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of buildings • Contaminants of concern includes hazardous chemicals, unexploded ordnance, and low-level radionuclides K:\Public-Affairs\Public Affairs Common Web\Photos\56118 - CAU 117 Pluto Demolition 09-28-2010.jpg

  8. Soils • Investigation, characterization, and corrective actions of 126 historic surface soil contamination sites • Atmospheric nuclear weapons tests • Nuclear safety experiments • Evaluation tests for peaceful uses of nuclear explosives (i.e., Plowshare Program) 41700.jpg = Soils CASs

FY 2011 ER Activities(continued) • UGTA • Groundwater characterization of wells drilled in FY 2010 • Data from new wells are used to support the NSO effort to study the complex geology and subsurface water systems of the NNSS • Objective is to provide a better understanding of the extent and future movement of radiological contamination in the groundwater so that Institutional controls and monitoring systems can be put in place to protect the public • Completion of the Corrective Action Investigation stage for CAU 98 Frenchman Flat

NSTec Commercial Laboratory Use • FY 2011 • Environmental: $330,000 • Industrial Hygiene: $20,000 • Metals are analyzed by the on-site American Industrial Hygienists Association (AIHA) accredited laboratory • Bioassay: $10,000 • FY 2012 • Environmental: $250,000 • Industrial Hygiene: $20,000 • Bioassay: $40,000

  16. N-I Commercial Laboratory Use • FY 2011 • Environmental: $200,000 • $170,000 funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Action (ARRA) • Industrial Hygiene: $9,000 • FY 2012 • Environmental: $367,000 • Industrial Hygiene: $1,000

Waste Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDF) for FY 2012 • U.S. Ecology in Beatty, Nevada • Hazardous waste total volume ~ 500 ft3 per year • Rinchem in Albuquerque, New Mexico • Hazardous waste total volume ~ 500 ft3 per year • M&EC Perma Fix in Oak Ridge, Tennessee • Mixed low-level waste total volume ~ 20 ft3 per year
