  1. The Electric Lazair ProjectThe biggest question so far:What’s new?

  2. I have decided to be involved in making the eLazair and electric power system available for sale, BUT, only when I am happy with it! #1

  3. We have a name: #2

  4. #3 We have 40% more power in the same package

  5. #4 We have 20% more energy in our 5 gallons of fuel.

  6. #5 We are using Lithium cells which have their life rated in thousands of cycles.

  7. #6 We have lighter, more versatile chargers that can fly with you.

  8. #7 We have motor controllers that have a very smooth and low rpm starting routine.

  9. #8 We are developing a ‘turn a key’ user interface with the power system

  10. What have I spent the most time on?The ‘turn a key’ power and data management system.

  11. Battery Management Data: Monitor lowest and highest cell voltage in each battery. Monitor all cell voltages in each battery. Monitor current draw from/to each battery. Monitor each battery temperature.

  12. Aircraft Data: Motor rpm. Motor temperature. Flight time under power. Flight time gliding. GPS speed, alt and nav info. Aircraft logbook

  13. Data Manipulation: Set battery cell balance resistors to maintain equal cell voltages. Disconnect a battery from either the aircraft power pus or the charging bus on a high or low cell voltage condition. Only engage a battery to the aircraft power bus if it has near the same state of charge as others on the bus. Calculate and display the energy level of the batteries on the bus. Warn the pilot when battery or motor temperatures are abnormal. Warn the pilot when he is low on fuel (about 5 minutes left) and then ‘running on fumes’ when there is only a couple minutes left.

  14. More Data Manipulation: Limit the level of throttle that the pilot can request when he is ‘running on fumes’. Show the pilot a logbook of all the aircraft flights and charging sessions. Give the pilot pages to view all the individual cell and pack data that is monitored. Do not allow the pilots to discharge a battery below safe levels. Record all data every second of a flight to an SD card for logbook use and data analysis. Send logbook and flight logs over a wireless bluetooth connection to a PC or iPhone.

  15. More info and videos on the electric Lazair project can be found by Googling ‘electric lazair’The Rcgroups.com forum site has a complete build log thread on it.Or of course, come to our website when we have a chance to get it up and running.
