  4. Predators/Prey • Prey- small komodo dragons, small deer, pigs, water buffalo • Predators- bigger komodo dragons, when young birds. Mostly humans.

  5. Housing • Lives in burrows • Trees and shrubs near water

  6. Climate • Hot most of the time • Very little rainfall • Near the equator • Average temperature all year 80 degrees Fahrenheit

  7. Facts • Can grow up to 10 ft • Weights up to 330 pounds • Can live from 20 years or more

  8. Pack • It may travel in a pack when hunting or maybe by itself

Interesting facts • An eyewitness account revealed that a 101 lb dragon  ate a 90 lb. pig in 20 minutes.  As a comparison, a 100 lb. person would have to eat 320 quarter pound hamburgers in less than 20 minutes to keep up with the dragon. • Komodo Island Monitor has a very low immune system • Has a poisonous bite that kills its prey in a day or two • Can run at 11 mph in short burst • 100 of them die a day

  10. Reproduction • Males wrestles other males for females • Female can lay up to 30 eggs • Eggs are buried underground • Offspring are different colors when born but become one solid color later • They are 5 to 7 years when they reproduce

  11. Why it is endangered? • The main threat is volcanic activity • Poaching and poaching of prey species • Alteration of habitat • Tourism • Fires • earthquakes

  12. Population • About 4,000 to 5,000 still alive.

  13. Conservation • The komodo National Park was established in 1980 to protect both the Komodo dragon and its habitat. • It works well for them • The Indonesian government protects them • Laws on protecting them came into effect in 1980. To protect them because they are dying off.
