  2. What is the Big Wild? The Big Wild refers to the part of Canada that is still in its natural state. The large road less area where rivers flow free, big lakes and oceans lap against wild shores and animals of diverse species roam as they have for thousands of years.

  3. What is our vision? Our vision is to keep at least half of Canada’s public land and water wild forever. The Big Wild helps campaigns by, educating people about the urgent need to protect one of the world’s last remaining wilderness areas – which amounts to 20% of all that’s left on the planet -raising funds for wilderness protection -enabling people to show decision-makers they support wilderness protection

  4. Who is the Big Wild? The Big Wild is you and me, and every person across Canada and around the world, who cares about conserving our environment.Its founders are CPAWS (the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society), Canada’s only nation-wide Non-Government Organization devoted solely to large-landscape public wilderness protection and Mountain Equipment Co-op, Canada’s largest retail cooperative dedicated to supporting people in achieving the benefits of self-propelled wilderness and outdoor recreation.

  5. Why is the Big Wild important? According to conservation science, maintaining a healthy ecosystem in Canada, requires that at least half of our land and water remain in its natural state.With the pace of human development in Canada accelerating at an exponential rate, we believe there has not been enough consideration put towards preserving large interconnected wilderness areas. This concern is confirmed by the fact that less than 10% of our wilderness is currently protected.Someone has to raise their hand and demand that we increase our responsibility towards Canada’s environment. Since one person is seldom heard in our hectic world, The Big Wild is a collective voice that will be heard across the country and hopefully around the world.Providing this voice for our wilderness is one of the most important things we can do in our lifetime

The Big Wild initiatives The Big Wild highlights key initiatives that are poised to achieve significant progress toward our vision and urgently require a critical mass of public support in order to succeed. The first group of initiatives featured here are organized by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS). The Big Wild will continue to highlight CPAWS - and other - campaigns across the country to help protect Canada's large-scale landscapes and waterscapes.

  7. -Caribou and you- By saving the threatened woodland caribou’s remaining Boreal forest habitat across Canada, we’ll also help protect one of the world’s largest remaining carbon reserves, and slow the effects of climate change. -Where woodland caribou populations are healthy, our Boreal forests are too. But more than half of caribou have already disappeared because of fragmentation caused by roads and industrial development. Canada’s governments are obligated under the Species-at-Risk Act to save our country’s remaining woodland caribou. -Save Canada’s eastern woodlands- There is still time to protect precious great wild spaces within a day’s drive of millions of people in cities like -Montreal, Toronto and New York. -Despite heavy urban development, surprisingly wild networks of forests and wetlands still stretch from Ontario’s Algonquin Park to New York's -Adirondacks, and throughout Canada's Maritimes. The Eastern ---------Woodlands are a haven for lynx and marten, millions of birds and the endangered Atlantic salmon.

  8. -Add your voice to the effort by CPAWS and other groups to protect some 3,000 km² of threatened Eastern Woodlands in Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia within the next two years. -Protect Canada’s southern Rockies- By protecting this vital link in one of the world’s great remaining mountain ecosystems we’ll secure room to roam for threatened wildlife like Grizzly bears and wolves. -The wild, forested slopes and valleys of Alberta and British Columbia’s southern Rockies are biologically rich - and vital habitat for wide-ranging keystone critters like Grizzly bears and wolves. But on each side of Waterton -National Park, industrial developments threaten this region’s delicate ecological balance.

  9. The Big Wild Challenge The challenge is to raise as much money as you can while still in the wild.

  10. Prizes -MEC will match funds raised by MEC members through The Big Wild Challenge before October 1st, dollar for dollar, to a maximum of $250,000. We are also offering prizes to: -Registrants: All Big Wild Challenge registrants will be entered into a monthly draw to win an MEC $100 gift card (one awarded per month for 6 months, beginning in April). Participants who register their Challenge before June 30th and successfully complete a Big Wild Challenge by Labour Day will be ALSO entered to win one of the following great prizes from MEC.

  11. Fundraisers • All Big Wild Challengers (individuals or teams) who raise at least $100 for The Big Wild will be entered into a draw to win one of three MEC $250 gift card per trip member (max of $750 gift card value per team). • The Big Wild Challenge (individual or team) that raises the most money for The Big Wild will receive an MEC $500 gift card per trip member (max of $1,500 gift card value per team) • The Big Wild Challenge (individual or team) that has the highest number of supporters will receive an MEC $500 gift card per trip member (max of $1,500 gift card value per team).

  12. Criteria To register for any Big Wild Challenge category you will need to make sure: -You and your family or team have registered on the bigwild.org. -Your trip takes place off-road and beyond the parking lot in either a public wilderness park (national/provincial/territorial) or on public (crown) land or water in Canada. -Your trip involves a minimum of 24 hours without fixed-roof shelter. -Your means of travel is self-propelled. -You have declared a fundraising goal for The Big Wild. -Your Challenge sets a goal or objective for trip members to achieve together. For example, first family trip, first ascent, most vertical, most days without a shower.

  13. Categories Challenge Categories Big or small, long or short, alone, or with friends, family or colleagues, there’s a Big Wild Challenge category for everybody. Which one will you do?1. The Big Wild Epic Your adventure will last several days and will most likely require specialized skills you have developed while exploring rugged and remote locations way, way, way off the beaten path. MEC members who participate in an Epic Challenge may be eligible for expedition support. 2. The Big Wild AdventureDedicate some precious time away from urban life, even if it’s short, to protecting our Big Wild. Your adventure will be at least overnight, and has a goal – like re-connecting with nature, or long lost friends, or running a river you’ve never run or hiking the furthest you’ve ever hiked in a day. 3. The Big Wild Family AffairNo iPods, no video games, and no internet. Yikes! This challenge will be tough enough for most families so set yourself an easy goal that will bring the family together for at least 24 hours and camp in a place that’s accessible to everyone. Remember the first goal in any family affair is fun.

  14. You are also encouraged by the Big Wild Challenge to: -Post images, video, and blog entries on the www.bigwild.org to share your experience and inspire other people to take a challenge of their own.

  15. Mountain Equipment Co-op. - Mountain Equipment Co-op. Is a store in Halifax that is connected to the Big Wild challenge. Mountain Equipment Co-op and CPAWS are piloting the event. Mountain Equipment Co-op are sponsoring it along with CPAWS.

  16. The Class Trip If you go on a local trip you can register with The Big Wild and you can be a part of The Big Wild challenge. The class trip is connected to The Big Wild as such
