  1. LECTURE 6:-Physiological Effects Of Cold Application 1-Decrease in circulation. 2- Decrease in hemorrhage following trauma. 3- Decrease in formation of exudate. 4- Decrease of muscle spasm and spasticity. 5- Decrease in pain. 6- A reflex stimulation of a muscle. 7- A delayed vasodilitation. 8- Reduction of muscle fatigue.

  2. Hunting Response:- Lewis stated that following the application of intense cold to the body, there are vasoconstriction with the liberation of histamine substances produced by the intense and noxious stimuli.

  3. (1)Intense cold ------(2)Liberation of histamine like substances which leads to(3)vasodilatation for a brief period of time about 4-5 min.+ vasoconstriction lasts about 9-16 min.----- -(4)Removal of all the histamine like substances------ (5)Vasoconstriction was established again then (6)Vasodilatation occurring at interval of 15-30 min.

  4. Then sudden vasodilatation occuring due to an intense cold application is termed the hunting response. The after –effect " following removal of cold for prolonged time was vasodilatation which increased for 20 min. and then subsided slowly.

  5. Cold application to the abdominal wall-----increase gastric mobility and increase acid secretions in the stomach by reflex activity. Cold application directly to stomach------decrease gastric mobility and secrestions by drinking an acid cold drink.

  6. Effect Of Cold On Metabolism:- Immediate effect is decrease in metabolism due to vasoconstriction and slow respiratory rate. This changes lead to increase in metabolism and vasodilation occurs and increase pulse rate. Effect Of Cold On The Nervous System:- It depends on the duration of the cold application,the temperature reduction, the rate of reduction and the specific nerve fiber.

  7. *Cooler than 0 degree C----------facilitate reflex contraction . *Rapid 10 degree C reduction of temperature----peripheral nerve inhibition. *Drop to 20 degree C --------reduction in the production of acetylcholine------Reduced rate of nerve conduction--------Reductio of action potential.
