  1. By Sergio Machaca, Jake Valinotti, Alec L’Amoreaux, Zek Zhang, TolandKister The Effects of Video Games on Children:Physiological, Psychological, and Social

  2. Different Types of Gamers • Newbies (AKA Scrubs) • New or inexperienced players • Casual Gamers • Play games designed for ease of gameplay • Don’t spend excessive time on video games • Hardcore Gamers • Play more than the average casual gamer • Participate in games that require large amounts of time • Spend a lot of time playing with a large scale of people • Cyberathletes • People that play for monetary profit • Is considered a cult • The time spent playing video games is no longer considered leisure, but work • IF YOU ARE A CYBERATHLETE, YOU HAVE NO LIFE

  3. The Physiological Effects • Video games restrict the amount of time children have during the day • Could be used for exercise, sports, schoolwork, etc. • Average child plays video games 12.6 hours a week • If time for physical/mental exercise is restricted on a child, the child will: • Possibly not grow to their full potential, when compared to other children who study and play sports more often • Gain weight, in some instances

  4. The Psychological Effects:Negative • Children playing violent games frequently (Rated T or above) are more prone to mirror violence in real life • It is possible to adopt an addiction to certain video games • This is dependent on the person and their personal taste in video games • Addiction to video games can decrease the average output of beta waves • Beta waves are necessary for the normal function of the human mind

  5. The Psychological Effects:Positive • The flip side of this is the positive effects of video games • Studies have shown that children who play average amounts of high-speed, shooter, or coordinate video games developed more advanced levels of hand-eye coordination • When given a certain amount of time to play Tetris, most people’s beta wave output increased by 2% • However, when played for more than 2 hours, the effects turned negative

  6. The Social Effects • Different video games have different effects on children’s social lives • If a child becomes addicted to a video game, they might lose social status or trust among friends • They might also adopt abnormal manners of thought or action
