iPADS IN CLASS ASSESSMENTS RETENTION iPad in classroom • Challenge • Teaching students the concept of ‘insight’, and how to reach it, using Chupa Chups and iPads • Solution • Mini focus groups x 4 students in tutorials. • Each group has ‘target consumer’, two interrogators, and a recorder (filming group using iPad) • Objective: find out ‘why’ consumer really loves Chupa Chups….get to the ‘insight’. • Method: Hold focus group (some prompts provided), then review footage and report back to class • Pros • Student enthusiasm++ • Stimulates discussion (and it’s fun) • Novel approach, most seem to grasp ‘insight’ • Cons • None Jacki Krahmalov
iPADS IN CLASS ASSESSMENTS RETENTION iPad in classroom • Challenge • Some important content is difficult to teach, may be perceived as ‘dry’ (eg Spam Act 2003) • Solution • Lecture followed by iPad recap in tutorial - using Nearpod (real-time interactive polling App) • Pros • Student enthusiasm++ in voting • Stimulates discussion (and it’s fun) • Works on iPhone and older iPads • Cons • Disappointment for those who could not connect Jacki Krahmalov
iPADS IN CLASS ASSESSMENTSRETENTION iPad for assessment • Challenge • Introducing themselves, expressing opinion using iPad • Solution • 15sec video of themselves (TVC length), filmed on iPad, uploaded to tutorial group blog on vUWS - 5% • Pros • Encourages students to use iPad • Forces them to express opinion to camera in TVC time • ‘Meet’ other students in tutorial group • Cons • 5% couldn‘t follow instructions (but lots of techie students helped on Discussion Board) • 3rd years without iPad (told to use laptop/iPhone) • Some vid formats only viewable in Safari or Chrome Jacki Krahmalov

iPADS IN CLASS ASSESSMENTS RETENTION Group blogs • Challenge • All Advertising Units involve Team work – need a better way to teach and assess collaboration (as per Industry), minimise group implosions, and provide facility for peer review • Solution • Group blog for each Team on vUWS, individual assessment 10%. • Explained collaboration at Tutorial, showed how to use the vUWS Blog, suggested collaboration tools: Google docs, images, vids, schedule etc Jacki Krahmalov

iPADS IN CLASS ASSESSMENTS RETENTION Group blogs(comments from survey) • Pros • Shows proof of who is contributing what • Easy to upload all kinds of files (unlike FB) • Away from Social Media (and its distractions) • Felt more professional than FB • All ideas are in the one spot • Cons • No notifications, no way of knowing if someone has posted, and easy to forget to blog • Clunky, cumbersome interface • Non user-friendly interface • Seemed more intimidating than FB, and FB is linked to our phones and iPad Jacki Krahmalov
