How can you help? • Ask your child… • what s/he is reading about in class • for more than the plot—ask for opinions and for things from the text (evidence) that will back up his/her opinions • what s/he is supposed to be doing with the text • Where is the class going? • Are there any focus questions? • Literary terms to look for?

How can you help? • Read your child’s writing • Do you understand what s/he is writing about? • If it’s persuasive or argumentative, do you understand what his/her position is? • Do you understand what at least part of the story is about? • Does it make sense?
