  2. Background Information Element Name: Silicon Element Symbol: Si Atomic Number: 14 Atomic Mass: 28.0855 Melting Point: 2577.20˚F Silicon is a Solid and a Metalloid. It belongs to the Carbon Group. It was discovered in 1787 by Antoine Lavoisier.

  3. Common Uses • Computer Chips: The first stage of silicon refining produces a irregular blob. After additional purification the Silicon is grown into large single crystals to be cut into wafers, after which computer chips are etched onto the surface.

  4. Common Uses (continued) • Automotive Parts: Silicon is an essential part of the automotive casting industry. Aluminum silicon alloy is added to liquid iron before it is cast in the shape of a car part to strengthen the resulting shape. • Toy Products: Certain mixtures of silicon that include small amounts of boric acid have the unique ability to be manipulated and bend into different shapes before returning to its original cast shape, making it a popular ingredient in many toy products. Some toys include silly putty, bouncing balls, stress balls, and My Little Ponies

  5. Interesting Facts • Pure silicon has a gray color. • Silicon is the second most abundant element after oxygen, in the earths crust. • Silicon is a great choice for use in microchips
