  1. SIMPLE PAST TENSE Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to 1791. He started composing at the age of five years old and wrote more than 600 pieces of music. He was only 35 years old when he died. • The verbs "was, lived,started, wrote, died" are in the simple past tense. • Notice that: • lived, started,died are regular past forms. • was, wrote are irregular past forms.

  2. Regular verbs: • The verbs "lived, started, died" are regular past forms. The rule is the following: • Verb + ed Examples:

  3. Irregular verbs: • The verbs "was, wrote" are irregular past forms. "Was" is the simple past of "to be"; "wrote" is the simple past of "write".

  4. The forms of the simple past: The Affirmative form of the simple past: I, you, he, she, it, we, they played. wrote did. Examples: • I played tennis with my friends yesterday. • She wrote a letter last night. • They did my homework.

  5. The interrogative form of the simple past: Did I, you, he, she, it, we, they play? watch? do? Examples: • Did you play basketball yesterday? • Did she watch television? • Did we do the homework?

  6. The negative form of the simple past: I, you, he, she, it, we, they did not/didn't like eat do Examples: • You didn't like the food in the wedding last Saturday. • I didn't eat it. • She didn’t do that.

  7. The use of the simple past The simple past is used principally to describe events in the past, but it also has some other uses. Here are the main uses of the simple past. Finished events in the past • William Shakespeare wroteHamlet. • Christoph Columbus discovered America in 1492. • He kissed her and left.

  8. Past habitual action • I visited them every day for a year. • I drove to work every day when I worked with that company.

  9. If there is not verb in sentence use “was/were”. for example: kind, beautiful, smart, student, doctor, teacher • I ,he, she, it ->was You, they, we -> were Example: • She was beautiful • They were a doctor

  10. Put the verbs into the simple past: • Last year I … (go) to England on holiday. • It … (be) fantastic. • I … (visit) lots of interesting places. I … (be) with two friends of mine . • In the mornings we … (walk) in the streets of London. • In the evenings we … (go) to pubs. • The weather … (be) strangely fine. • She … (not / make) cupcakes for dinner. • But we … (see) some beautiful rainbows. • Where … (spend / you) your last holiday? • They … (not/ throw) garbage into the rubbish.

  11. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE • Past continuous tense atau past progressive tense adalah suatu bentuk kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi sedang terjadi pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Aksi tersebut telah dimulai tapi belum selesai pada saat itu.

  12. Structure of sentence • Positive sentences          • Subject + was/were + VingIf the subject is “he, she, It, I, singular or proper noun” then auxiliary verb “was” is used. If subject is “you, we, they or plural” then auxiliary verb “were” is used.Examples.              She was crying yesterday.              They were climbing on a hill.

  13. Negative sentences         • Subject + was/were + NOT + VingRules for using auxiliary verb after subject are same as mentioned above.Examples.             She was not crying yesterday.             They were not climbing on a hill.

  14. Interrogative sentences         • Was/were + Subject + VingExamples.             Was she crying yesterday?             Were they climbing on a hill?

Put the verbs into the correct form (past progressive). • When I phoned my friends, they … (play) monopoly. • Yesterday at six I … (prepare) dinner. • The kids … (play) in the garden when it suddenly began to rain. • I … (practice) the guitar when he came home. • We … (not / cycle) all day. • While Alan … (work) in his room, his friends … (swim) in the pool. • I tried to tell them the truth but they … (not / listen ) . • What … (you / do) yesterday? • Most of the time we … (sit) in the park. • I … (listen) to the radio while my sister … (watch) TV.

  16. Write positive sentences in past progressive. • My mother / read / a novel • My father / watch / a movie • My elder sister / writing / in her diary • My two brothers / listen / to the radio • My little sister and I / not / watch / a movie
