USES OF THE PAST TENSE • To talk about an activity that finished in the past. • To express some ideas that happened in the past. • To list some hobbies you did during your free time, besides, you are not doing them anymore. Examples: We played tennis last Sunday. I worked in London from 1984 to 1989. John left two minutes ago.

  3. KINDS OF VERBS THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF VERBS WHEN FORMING THE PAST. THEY ARE … NEXT

  4. REGULAR VERBS • These verbs, you just have to add ED at the end of the verb, when you are using the past. • Examples: • Travel – Traveledlive - lived • Play – Playedwant - wanted • Work – Worked walk - walked use - used

  6. IRREGULAR VERBS You have to learn these kind of verbs by heart, because they change totally the Root when changing to the past tense. Examples: Speak Spoke Write Wrote

  11. AUXILIARY DID We use the auxiliary DID when we are talking about the past tense, for the negative or interrogative statements. We use the same auxiliary DID for all the pronouns even if they are singular or plural. Example: you fish last week? We sleep last night DID DIDN´T

  12. N E G A T I V E S E N T E N C E S To form the negative sentences, we use the same structure of the affirmative ones. We just use the short or long form of the auxiliary did in a negative way. Example: He walked. He didn’t walk. I did my homework. I didn’t do my homework. DID NOT SHE FOLLOW ME DIDN´T

  13. QUESTIONS To write questions it is necessary to write first the auxiliary DIDfollowed by the pronoun, main verb, complement and finally the question mark. YOU LOOK AT ME ? DID HE LOOK AT ME DID Did you go to work yesterday? Yes, I did. No, I didn’t When did she arrive? She arrived yesterday
