Read Aloud: Listening Comprehension Today I will read a passage from a nonfiction book about 4 young inventors Remember that nonfiction text: • tells about real people, events, or situations. • is meant to provide information in an interesting way. Listen for information as I read “Up in Smoke” One purpose for listening is to learn what new idea the young inventors came up with.

  3. A controversy is an issue that people have conflicting opinions about.

  4. Discussion • Give one fact you know about airplanes. Then give an opinion about airplanes.

  5. Focus Skill: Fact and Opinion

  6. Some words and phrases that signal an opinion are: should, must be, best, worst, I think, &I believe

  7. Let’s Practice Extra Support pg 93…. Let’s read through the passage and identify the statements as either fact or opinion, and explain why 

  9. Let’s practice our vocabulary words for the week:

  10. tinker When you tinker with something, you try to fix or adjust it. What invention would you like to tinker with?

  11. hoaxer Someone who tries to trick people is a hoaxer. Is it ever okay to be a hoaxer? Why or why not?

  12. trampled If you trampled something, you stepped on it very hard and damaged it. What would happen if a large animal trampled things in a gift shop?

  13. forged If you forged something together, you did it with great effort and you hope it lasts a long time. Could a person forge a path through a swamp?

  14. perfect To perfect something is to improve it so that it is the best it can be. What invention do you think still needs to be perfected? Explain.

  15. quest A quest is a journey with a specific purpose. What quest would you like to go on?

  16. barriers Barriers are objects or people that keep you from moving ahead. What barriers might you face if you took a trip to another country?
