  5. Context: Leasing in UMRB • Market is largely “non-intermediated” • In Iowa (2012): • - Most land still rented direct between landowner and tenant • - 7% of leased acres are professionally managed by third party • - 75% cash lease; most one year; 40% still verbal

From 2012 Iowa Farmland Ownership Survey (Duffy): “Reasons for Owning the Land “ 50% current income ; 25% long term investment ; 25% sentimental “Importance of Various Tenant Characteristics” 92% tenant will be a good steward of the land; 25% tenant is a family member; 20% helping a young farmer getting started “Distribution of farmland by farming status of owner” 62% do not farm; 22% farm full time; 16% farm part time Gender Male 53% Women 47% Age 78% over age 55

Trends in Farmland Ownership • Ownership moving from “WWII generation” to “baby boom generation” • Moving away from farm • Multiple owners complicate management • High commodity prices, land values and rents attracting outside investment • Changes in ownership increasing need for professional management • Professional farm management growing
