WHAT’S GOING ON OUT WEST!!! • Between 1719 – 1819 nine states join the union!! • Reasons for expansion: • - Europeans clamored for cheap land • - middle colonies’ soil depleted • - speculators accepts small down payments for land • - safer frontier after Native Americans pushed farther west • - Cumberland Road: western MD to IL • - steamboats lead to upstream navigation

  7. South expected Missouri to enter as a SLAVE state.

  8. SHOW ME MISSOURI!!! • 1819: Wanted into the Union as a SLAVE state • House of Reps passed Tallmadge Amendment prohibiting slavery in MO and would emancipate children of present slaves • Congress was balanced at this time w/ • 11 states free & 11 states slave
