The Serpent • Low pitched wind instrument. • Mouthpiece like a brass instrument • Bent in a way that makes it look like a snake. • Side holes • Ancestor of the tuba because of the low pitch
Replaced the Serpent • Was replaced by the tuba • Shaped like a brass instrument by the way is coiled. • Uses nine to twelve keys instead of valves. • Still around today. Ophicleide
The Tuba • Invented by Wilhelm Wieprecht and Johann Gottfried Moritz. • Invented for the Prussian Army • Prussian Army loved the tuba after it was made. • Other countries started to make their own forms of the tuba.
Marching Tuba The tuba was designed to be put on a person’s shoulder. Sits on left shoulder Right hand going across body to reach valves The bell of the tuba is facing forwards
Sitting tuba • Sits on the chair with you • Sits towards the right side of the player • Mouthpiece situated to the left • Normally used in concert bands, Symphony’s, and orchestras
Sousaphone • Was not invented by John Phillip Sousa. • J. W. Pepper invented the Sousaphone 1893. • Named it after John Phillip Sousa because of Sousa’s suggestions. • Wraps around the tuba-ist body. Sits on the players left shoulder and right hip. The valves sit on the middle of the instrument. • The bell of the sousaphone can go one of two ways • It can face straight up in the air • It can also curve and face towards the front.
Wagner Tuba • Made not to long after the first tuba • Somewhat smaller than the regular tuba • It has four vavles instead of three valves.
