  1. Evaluation Lisa Ryan 14K

  2. 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  3. Real MEDIA products • By looking at various film genres I was able to see the general codes and conventions employed in a teaser trailer. • This research was continued for all aspects of my marketing campaign, including my film poster and film magazine. • I liked the way in which there are a variety of types of film poster. ~character poster ~teaser poster~ official poster • I had to research film magazines, and unlike music magazines they are not all genre specific. Due to the niche-market status they have film magazines tend to allow room for a variety of film genres ranging from Rom-Com to animation.

  4. Film magazine Ancillary Task

  5. Codes and Conventions Strapline Masthead Date, issue number Lure Buzz Word Attracts readers Puff images Features Film title Lure Publishing company logo Bar code Strapline Pun

  6. Strapline Masthead- behind Main image Reveals establishment with audience Lure Lure Colour scheme- Masthead stands out, Yellow to blend in with the title of the main feature- Caribbean Features Buzz word- engages the reader Taglines- include Puns to excite the reader Date, issue And barcode

  7. Challenges… Initially the difference In my film magazine is Evident. The main feature is not the character But the main actor in the film. • Simplistic colour scheme focuses attention • on main image. • Structured outlook makes it easy to navigate • around. • As my film magazine does not have the same • established audience my masthead is in full • View- not blocked by the main image. • Block stark colours are eye-catching and • demand attention. • ~Lure is not in puffs- can look childish. ~issue • and date in small font~ colourful image- stand out • ~ no tagline- to focus on the actual articles and • the magazine~

  8. Film Poster

  9. Tagline- gives extra information about the mood/ themes in film Colours are employed to convey the genre. This is a feature that I Focused on when creating my poster. Darker colours convey a More sinister note and this was something I was conscious of As my genre is a hybrid and Contains a mixture of mainstream Genres. Typical features such as a tagline Add punch to the poster, and the Positioning is key as it is meant to Be eye-catching but not to take Away from the title Main image- Vocal point Of any poster Actor names- Typically A-list Actors- this Entices the audience Title of film- Must stand out Needs to be eye-catching And demand attention Billing block- conventionally Positioned in the lower third-.

  10. The white background of the poster Draws attention to the main image And the typeface. I experimented with different typefaces But found that Monotype Corsiva, fitted my genre and style better overall. Actor name Main image- 3D like I wanted to challenge my audience’s perception of a typical film poster. My main image is simplistic, however it is through the editing process that my image becomes prominent and exciting. Tagline Title of film Billing block

  11. My Poster… In my poster I used the generic positioning of the billing block, however I added my own twist, to make what is usually a mundane component of the poster, exciting and noticeable. By using contrasting colours for roles and names my billing block develops the traditional convention giving it a modern and in my opinion more appealing edge. During research and planning I created Various flat plan designs for my poster… Take a look at my employment of such flat Plan designs.

  12. Teaser Trailer • To get to grips with the codes and conventions used in teaser trailer’s I researched and analysed a couple. • The generic conventions I found of particular intrigue are: • voiceover • Fast paced action • Montage sequence • Website • Catchy soundtrack • I wanted my teaser trailer to ignite intrigue and not to give away the plot, as teaser trailers are used as a means of wetting the audience’s appetite.

  13. Take a peek…

  14. Construction… • My teaser trailer challenges and develops many of the codes and conventions. • The genres included in my hybrid genre film are: action, crime, drama and romance; as this is what my audience wanted- (discovered via questionnaire). • Production companies give away the prestige of the film, therefore I wanted to create two exciting and innovative companies- Streetlight Entertainment and Tempest Productions. • In the opening of any trailer these company logos are displayed, they tend to lend themselves to the same theme and colour of the film, establishing not only genre but house-style.

  15. 2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

  16. Effectiveness… • From my audience feedback I feel that my promotional package was effective. • I created not only a poster, magazine cover and teaser trailer, but a Facebook profile which allows my audience to write and talk about the upcoming film. • This online profile also enabled me to upload pictures from shooting and hold competitions to further engage and facilitate my audience’s desires.

  17. Combination… • My ancillary tasks incorporate the same house-style as my trailer. Particular colours such as red is used predominantly throughout all my tasks. • My magazine cover strays from conventional means, in terms of the aesthetical approach; vibrant colours are not a key element- I want my magazine cover to look professional and informative, it also contains a feature article from the perspective of my actor- this is in direct contrast to the covers which I analysed during my research process. • Compiling my trailer and both ancillary tasks I wanted to further enhance my portfolio, by creating a blooper reel and online profile I feel that I was able to reach and engage a wider audience.

  18. 3) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

  19. Feedback • My audience were heavily involved throughout all of the research, planning, and construction stages. • Forums like Facebook and my classroom were of vital importance, as online people could give me tips, opinions and advice whilst not only classmates but other pupils could witness each process and offer their opinion. This proved to be vital as it allowed me to alter certain things throughout the editing process. • What my audience commented on: ~name of film ~ name of magazine ~colour scheme ~main images ~sequence of trailer ~soundtrack ~actors ~ typeface~

  20. Positives and Negatives of Feedback • Select groups were asked to give feedback: my class members especially during the editing process and also the Facebook followers. • My class members were able to give me critical comments on a face to face basis but could do so interactively via Facebook, MSN and Pbworks. • What I would do in the future is be more interactive with my audience and possibly invite them to a screening of a first edition of my trailer- that way my audience feedback can be acted upon immediately and practically not theoretically, as I am doing now.

  21. Examples of audience feedback This is an email I received from a member Of my Facebook profile for the trailer. Eimear- also a media studies student offered me feedback; Her advice unfortunately came a little too late And therefore I would take her advice to brighten some of my moving images if I was to repeat this task. It might be better to have the main image in front so it stands out more. . . but I love the effects you used! :D This is another screengrab image of my Pbworks site a place where my class members could offer me feedback on both my ancillary and main tasks.

  22. 4)How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research and planning and evaluation stages?

  23. Technology • Various forms of technology were used to create my portfolio: ~Photoshop ~Animoto ~Digital Camera~ Camcorder ~ YouTube ~Prezi ~Garageband ~Imovie ~Iphoto ~Microsoft Office ~Facebook • The internet was a key element in my work, as it allowed me to gain access to magazine covers, posters, film companies, magazine companies amongst other outlets. • Technology is always a vital part in media studies as it opens doors, and allows you to create a new, innovative exciting promotional package.

  24. Research and Planning • Blogging and Pbworks were essential to my research and planning as I was able to upload and talk about all my findings. • The internet was vital as it allowed me to discover important information on the film industry, from the trailer to the poster to the magazine cover. • Prezi is an online site that allows you to brainstorm in the form of a spider diagram; this technology is quite recent and was at times difficult to use as the screen zooms in and out at its own free will seemingly, however it proved to be useful as I could log in anytime to add to the diagram and visually see my ideas coming together.

  25. Construction • The Imac was essential during construction as its tools were key in the editing process. • Imovie enabled me to cut footage and edit the timing by slowing down my moving images and editing the colouring of the scene. • Garageband turned out to be my favourite media technology, I created my own backing track for the trailer. Sounds like door closing were useful to emulate the sound of a crash/ explosion, which is the sound I wanted to create.

  26. Evaluation • I used PowerPoint to create my evaluation, this was useful as I have ample experience using this form of technology. • In order for me to take advantage of new media technology I discovered a new way in which to present my powerpoint presentation, Slideshare is a free website which enables you to display your presentation online.
