  1. English language learners and the importance of culture By: Kedra Collins

  2. The English language learner • English Language Learners are students whose native language is not English but are in mainstream schools with English instruction • English Language Learners may be from any country or place where English is not the native language. • The English Language Learner population is increasing constantly. • There are not enough qualified or properly trained teachers to appropriately accommodate ELLs in order to give them proper education to achieve academic success. • There is more to every English Language Learner than just the “single story” that the average person sees. • Culture of ELLs is important for both biculturalism in schools as well as for use as resources for both ELLs and Native English Speakers • Biliteracy, bilingualism, and biculturalism are important parts of the opportunities and academic success of ELLs and even Native English Speakers

  3. Diversity of ells and their cultures

  4. The danger of a single story • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9Ihs241zeg • (I originally converted and embedded the video as you asked and as was shown in the tutorials, however, even when I shortened the video it would not allow me to send it or submit it to black board. I understand that I will lose points but this is the only way my power point would submit.)

  5. Culture is an important resource

  6. Culture is a resource found within every ELL

  7. Every existing culture creates a new shared culture
