  1. Who are Potential Encore Teachers? The Teaching as a Second Career survey found that two-thirds of those interested in teaching had considered the idea in the past, suggesting that a potential career switch has more than just casual appeal. Those working in engineering, science, and information technology were somewhat more likely than others to consider teaching. Nearly half of all potential teachers (most of whom are women and between 50 and 60) said they are considering teaching in the next five years. A majority considered teaching in the past, suggesting that this group is the “low-hanging fruit" most ripe for recruitment into the field. Many have postgraduate or higher degrees, favor more traditional schools and schools in suburban areas, and are more interested in teaching at the high school than elementary school level. What are Encore Jobs in Education? • Pre-K – 12 (primary teachers, specialist teachers, professional support, administrators)* • Vocational Technical Education, Adult Basic Education, Community Programs • College Education (full-time teachers, adjunct teachers, tutors, administrators)** • Non-profit education-based organizations *License required upon completion of approved educator preparation program from a specified College/University or an Alternative, Practice-Based Licensure Program. **Most settings are looking for someone with at least an MA degree to teach college classes.   3. Where are Encore Opportunities in Education? Teachers in Massachusetts are less likely to be very young and more likely to be over the age of 49, compared to all workers in the state. Less than a third of all workers, but more than 37 percent are age 49 and older, signaling that the impact of the baby boomer retirements may be more strongly felt In the teaching profession than in other employment sectors. Postsecondary teaching is expected to grow by 15% between 2008 and 2018, faster than the average for all occupations due to increases in college enrollments reflecting increases in the 18- to 24-year-old population and a rise in high school graduates’ interest in attending college. Adults returning to college to enhance career prospects or to update skills will create new opportunities for postsecondary teachers, particularly at community colleges and for-profit institutions that serve working adults.
