  1. Allusions In The Adventures of Mark Twain’s A Patrick William Carey Production

  2. Don Quixote Tom Sawyer Is the famous character in Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha. Is Mark Twains take on the famous “anti-hero” Don Quixote, while Huck plays the role of Sancho, Don’s earthly squire. as Don Quixote has an incredible imagination and eventually becomes convinced he is a knight errant. He works to revive the virtues of chivalry, honesty, and dignity. If you have read Don Quixote, you already know of the Don’s great imagination, and the realism of Sancho. Mark Twain alludes to this stark contrast of ideas when in the passage where Huck, Tom, and the other boys start a gang. (pp15-23) He chooses to see the world differently from those around him. Most view him to be a lunatic.

  3. Hatfield – McCoy Family Feud Ole Ran’l McCoy Devil Anse Hatfield The Sheperdson-Grangerford feud is an allusion to the real life Hatfield McCoy feud. The exact cause of the fight is unknown, but most speculate it goes back to the pre civil war era when Floyd Hatfield stole a razor back pig from Randal McCoy. An interesting similarity between the Hatfield-McCoy feud, the Sheperdson-Grangerford fight, and the squabble between the Montagues and Capulets is that they all in some way include “star-crossed lovers.”

  4. Shakespeare Shakespeare’s tragic romance stories had a big influence on the development of several major characters in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

  5. Hamlet Shakespeare’s Hamlet is yet another interesting allusion in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In both pieces, the author involves a play within a story that foreshadows the eventual demise of a character, either through death, or tar and feathering.

  6. King Lear The Duke & Dauphins Royal Nonesuch play is an allusion to the famous breakdown scene in Act III of Shakespeare’s King Lear.

  7. Sheperdson Grangerford Buck’s Killer Harney Sheperdson Sophia Grangerford Buck Character Comparison Romeo Juliet Mercutio Capulet Montague Tybalt The Sheperdson-Grangerford feud is an obvious parallel to the the star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet and their families, the Capulets and Montagues.

  8. Biblical Allusion Throughout their river journey, Huckleberry grows to be more and more like the biblical character Moses. Both characters grow up in a system they later come to challenge.

  9. Wise King Solomon “Hmm. A baby problem eh?” Huck and Jim allude to this famous biblical tale in the early scenes of Huckleberry Finn. Jim can not see the point of the story, as he interprets the story literally. “We’ll cut the baby into pieces. Baby for everybody!”

  10. Moon River By John Mercer Moon river, wider than a mileI'm crossing you in style some day Oh, dream maker, you heart breakerWherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way Oh, dream maker, you heart breakerWherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way Two drifters, off to see the worldThere's such a lot of world to seeWe're after the same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bendMy huckleberry friend, Moon River, and me Two drifters, off to see the worldThere's such a lot of world to seeWe're after the same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bendMy huckleberry friend, Moon River, and me

  11. John Mercer’s hometown was renamed Moon River in honor of the famous song. “Moon River” has been sung by many famous artists including Andy Williams, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra. Perhaps the most famous rendition of “Moon River” is by Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
