Summary • Took place in Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, Missouri. • Tom Sawyer is a troublemaker who is always up for an adventure with his friends. • He gets punished for skipping school and getting into a fight. • Tom falls in love with a new girl in town named Becky Thatcher. • Accompanies Huck Finn to the grave yard to try out a cure for warts. • At the graveyard, they witnessed the murder of Dr. Robinson by Injun Joe. (Muff Potter was blamed) • Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Joe Harper ran away to a deserted island to become pirates. • They came back because they were home sick, and everyone was happy that they were alive. • Tom tries to get Becky to like him again. (She was not his first girlfriend) • Muff Potter’s trial begins, and Tom felt guilty so he told the truth about the Murder. • Injun Joe flees the courtroom. • After a couple of weeks, Tom and Huck went for another adventure and saw Injun Joe disguised as a deaf and dumb Spaniard, trying to find a box of gold with his partner. • Then Huck started to follow Injun Joe and overheard a conversation about attacking Widow Douglas. After hearing their plan, he quickly ran for help and became a hero right after. Injun Joe escaped once again and hid inside McDougal’s cave. • In school, Tom goes on a picnic at McDougal’s cave with Becky and their classmates; the two got separated from the others and soon became lost in the cave but later finds another way out. • A week after, both Tom and Huck went back into McDougal’s cave and found a box of gold. • They found out that Injun Joe died from starvation while trying to find a way out. • In the end, Tom and Huck became the town heroes for their courage.
Tom Sawyer • Novel’s protagonist. • Lives with his Aunt Polly, Sid, and Mary. • Always gets into trouble because of Sid. • An Intelligent young man. • Inside, he has a good heart and a strong moral conscience. • At first, he was immature. • In the end of the novel, he became a great role model to his school mates.
Huckleberry Finn • Tom’s friend • Have adventures together • Have no place to live and people that cares for him. • His father is always drunk, and his mother is unknown. • Other guys think that he is lucky to be alone. (Freedom, and no rules to obey) • Similar to Tom, they both enjoy going on an adventure.
Injun Joe • Novel’s antagonist. • He is half Native-American and half Caucasian. • He is cold-blooded and only cares for himself. • Has a violent mind. • He commits murder and becomes a robber. • Always seeks revenge. • He suffered social exclusion because of his race.
Character Development • Aunt Polly • At first she always punishes Tom for his wrongful actions. • Always on Sid’s side, and blaming Tom for any kind of trouble that happens. • In the end she changed her ways about treating Tom. Because Tom found a box of gold and became a Town hero. • When Tom threw a cake at Sid as a sign of revenge, Sid did the usual thing. But this time Aunt Polly did not care about Tom’s evil ways.
Themes & Motif Love – Tom saw a new girl in town named Becky Thatcher and fell in love with her right away. Jealousy – Becky did not like the fact that she was not the very first person that got engaged with Tom. Motif: Crime – Injun Joe murdered Dr. Robinson and blamed Muff Potter. Trading – Kids traded their valuable items to one another in order to achieve happiness.
