Overview of the Planning Process • Discussions between NSF (Harriet Taylor and Joe Urban) and ACM Education Board in 2007, culminating in a joint meeting in December 2007 • Early focus on enrollment crisis and RAGS report • Original intent to have the meeting in Summer 2008 • Formal funding application to NSF in Summer 2008 • Strong pushback related to RAGS in the December 2008 ACM Education Council meeting • Reorientation of the summit focus (with NSF’s approval) in early 2009

Overview of the Planning Process • Planning Committee: • Mark Guzdial (Chair), Jane Prey, Heikki Topi, and Joe Urban, advised by Boots Cassell • Invitations to participating organizations in February – March 2009 • Planning meeting in March 2009 • Preparation of the summit booklet in May-June 2009 • Summit on June 25-26, 2009 in Washington, D.C.

Invitation to Participate • Sent in February – March 2009 • Including a request to fill out an information form: • Mission, membership, role in computing education, three challenges, top three things that should be done, suggestion for a common goal • Stated purpose: “to come to a shared vision of the problems facing us in computing education and of how we might address those problems” • Commitment to “release the complete agenda and participant list, as well as the completed information forms well in advance of the meeting”

Planning Meeting • A one-day face-to-face meeting of the Planning Committee in March 2009 • Clarified summit goals • A consensus view of the challenges facing Computing Education • A shared set of strategies for addressing these challenges • Plans for coordinated effort for implementing these strategies

Planning Meeting • Formulated the agenda and specified the processes for conducting the meeting • Used the information form submissions • Challenges  Strategies  Actions  Priorities and commitments • Initial categorization of challenges: Diversity, Revising Curriculum, Professional Development/Life-long Learning, Attractive and Inviting Pedagogy, Identity of Computing, Promoting Computing • Identified additional participating organizations
