  3. History • Rhodium was discovered between 1803 and 1804 by William Hyde Wollaston in platinum ore he obtained in South America. • The name rhodium is derived from the Russian word “rhodon” which means rose

  4. Uses • Rhodium's Primary use is an alloying agent to harden platinum and palladium. Those agents are use for furnace windings. • Rhodium is also use for jewelry, for decoration, and for a catalyst. • Useful for an electric contact material as it has a low electrical resistance. • Sterling silver

  5. Why it is used those ways • Rhodium is used for sterling silver because is does not smudge, scratch, or tarnish and if combined with platinum it could be a hundred percent impermeable

  6. Properties • Melting Point: 1964°C the melting point is so high that it is rarely used to make whole pieces. • Boiling Point: 3695°C • Rhodium is hard and durable • It is silvery-white in appearance • It has a high reflectivity •  Density 12.45g/cm3 • Electrical conductivity: 23 x 106 S m-1

  7. One Other interesting Fact • Rhodium has the distinction of being the world's most expensive precious metal (as of 2010, 1 kilogram (kg) is worth approximately $80,000 U.S. dollars.
