  2. ROBOTICS Robots? • machines controlled by computers • can be used for a variety tasks • can carry out the same task over and over again • can be reprogrammed to change the task • can make decisions because it is controlled by computer • has two types: fixed and mobile

Fixed Robots • fixed to a single point in the factory • large decree of movement • work that needs to be done is brought to them • usually called a ‘Robot Arm’ • consists of rigid sections of different lengths connected together by joints which allow the attached sections to move • length of each section depends on the distances that the robot arm is expected to reach • number of joints dictates • > flexibility of arm > complexity of control program that the processor runs to operate the arm effectively

WHY ROBOTS? • produce more consistent results than human workers • more precise than a human being • can work • continuously without a break • areas or with materials which would be dangerous for a human being • do not • require heat or light • need to be paid (although they cost a lot to buy in the first place)

  5. HOW DOES IT WORK? • programmed by having a program written directly for it • technicians can move the ‘arm’ to positions that it needs to be and make it carry out all the actions that it needs to be carried out • the computer which controls the robot records all the positions that it was moved to and all the actions that it was made to do as numerical sequences • computers can then command the robot to repeat the action by replaying the sequences

  6. Mobile Robots • mobile and can move to position automatically • used on production lines to move things from one place to another place

  7. PRODUCTION LINES • used to create an end product from raw materials or other components • computers can be used to control the flow of materials along the whole production line • often controlled by sensors
