    Longhair breeds

    Birman (sacred cat of Burma) a. Very sociable cat that needs the company of others. b. Birman cats are sweet-natured, charming and intelligent. c. Sturdy cat of medium to large size, with a long, silky coat that does not mat and requires little care. d. White paws are characteristic of the Birman breed. e. Genetic defects have caused weak hind legs, nasal obstruction and poor occulation, resulting in breathing through the mouth.

    Persian (one of the oldest and most popular breeds) a. Medium to large size and with a short, compact body. b. Persians are well mannered, easy going, quiet cats that make good apartment cats and excellent companions. c. There are 6 groups of Persians divided for show purposes depending on eye and cat color. d. White Persians with blue eyes or odd eyes may be born deaf. e. Persians require daily grooming to avoid tangles and knots in their fur and regular bathing to remove excess oil from the coat. f. Some Persians experience breathing problems and clogged tear ducts.

    Ragdoll (originated in the US during the 1960’s) a. Exceptionally large and heavy breed that gets its name from the floppy posture it takes when handled. b. Ragdoll cats are docile, quiet, and composed. c. When Ragdolls are handled, they show little signs of fear or pain.

    Turkish Angora (originally called “Ankara cats” after the place of their origin –Akara, Turkey) a. Small to medium-sized cat that is polite, intelligent, very responsive, and easily trained to perform tricks. b. Prefers a clean, almost spotless environment. c. Originally bred to be white, but now many colors are noted. d. Persians are cousins to the Turkish Angora.
