What is written in a farmer’s agreement ? • Minimum Requirements • Details on organic standard • rules for organic farming that farmer has to follow • rules for processing on the farm and for bringing produce to buying center • Sanction policy • what happens if standard is violated • Grant access • farmer must give permission to internal and external inspectors to inspect farm and documentation • Contract in local language • Often also included(depending on project) • Other obligations of farmer, e.g. • can only sell his/her own produce • must not sell to other buyers as organic • product quality aspects • Other obligations for ICS operator, e.g • has to announce in advance how much will buy in this season • provide free training • has to pay organic premium • How can the contract be cancelled?

The Farm Entrance Form • “Farm Entrance Form” or “Basic Questionnaire” • total area under management of farmer • Mainly organic fields with cash crop, but also home consumption plots need to be registered • acreage under different crops and/or number of trees (for all organic crops) • Farming methods • Indication of last use of chemicals on every plot

  4. Overview Map • an overview map must be provided • shows where each farm is located (with code number) • preferably already indicates shape of farms & single fields • could indicate uncertified farmers (if not too many) • indicate landmarks • must be dated

Farm Map For farms with annual rotating crops or if farmer also grows conventional crops, a farm map shall be provided • shows the plots of the farmer • can also be used to register information on crops, year of planting and other relevant information • indicate conventional fields clearly • should indicate conventional neighbors if there is risk of chemical drift • indicate landmarks • shall be dated

  6. Farm Map: Another Example Good maps are difficult to prepare and rare !Nobody will expect a perfect map, but it should reflect the situation.
