  2. About Elizabeth’s Personal Life • She was born February 3rd, 1821, and died May 10th, 1910. • In 1856, she adopted Katherine “Kitty” Barry who was an orphan of Irish origin, who was her companion the rest of her life.

  3. Elizabeth’s College • Elizabeth was accepted to Geneva Medical College in New York City. • Supposedly, her acceptance to Geneva Medical School was suspected to be a practical joke.

  4. Elizabeth’s Contributions • She was the first woman doctor of medicine. • She founded her own infirmary called the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children. • Elizabeth was the first woman to graduate from medical school. • She was also known for educating other women in medicine.

  5. About Elizabeth • Elizabeth was also the first woman in history to earn her M.D. Degree. • She was rejected in New York City for jobs as a physician because she was a woman.

  6. Interesting Facts • Elizabeth lost sight in one eye in 1851, making her return back to New York City to give up her dream as a surgeon. • Elizabeth’s sister helped her with the infirmary.
