  1. 1.3.1.3.2 Functional Dendrimers and Hyperbranched Polymers as Potential Drug Delivery Systems Functional Dendrimers and/or Hyperbranched Polymers are currently investigated, among others, for their application as drug delivery systems. Such polymers are prepared through the modification of commercially available dendritic polymers. The materials are characterized by a variety of physicochemical methods before their application as prospected drug delivery systems. Multiple functionalization, secures enhanced targeting ability (through recognizable groups), stability (by PEGylation) and very possibly transport through cell membranes. Active drug ingredients are incorporated in the nanocavities of dendritic polymers while active drug moieties can also be attached covalently at their external surface. Prospected work includes the use of Dendrimers and Hyperbranched Polymers as prospected Gene Delivery Vectors. Schematic representation of a multifunctional dendrimer
