  1. NicolausCopernicus(1473-1543) By: Itzel Lazcano

  2. Background • His real name was Nikola Kopernik . • Nicolaus Copernicus is the Latin version. • Nicolaus was born on February 19, 1473, in Torun, a city in north-central Poland. • He was the youngest out of four children from a middle class family. • His was a true renaissance man. • He died on May 24,1543.

  3. Education Nicolausstudied liberal arts. Including astronomy and astrology while he attended the University of Cracow. But left before finishing his degree. After a few years he continued his scientific studies in Italy at the University of Bologna.

  4. Contributions • Nicolaus contributed in coming up with the Heliocentric solar system. There he used trigonometry to find out the distance between the sun and planets. • In a book called “De Revolutions”. Which described how the earth wasn’t the center of the solar system but the sun was.

  5. Nicolaus used trigonometry to find the distance between the sun and all the planets. When he found all the distances the first structure of the Solar System was made in astronomical units.

  6. Nicolaus also had a theorem named after him. Copernicus theorem, which states that a point on the circumference of the small circle traces a straight line segment which is the diameter of the bigger circle.

  7. summary I think Nicolaus Copernicus was a great mathematician because like he told everyone that the earth wasn’t the center of the universe by using trigonometry to find how distant each planet was away from the sun and making a structure of the solar system. The math he used which was trigonometry is still used today because you have to learn it in school.

  8. Extra Credit • Nicolaus was born in Poland. • Another mathematician born in Poland is Stanislaw Mazur. • He made important contributions to geometrical methods in linear and nonlinear functional analysis.
