This proposal outlines two innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing the online learning experience for MBA Year 1 students at DCU. First, we introduce a Twitter forum for discussing strategy case studies, encouraging real-time interaction despite potential subscription barriers. Second, we propose using Skype for guest presentations, allowing students to engage with professionals abroad at a low cost and without travel constraints. Additionally, an online Excel lab for IS101 will offer flexible learning opportunities. Each initiative presents unique advantages and challenges, promising to enrich the educational environment.

Online learning proposal Malcolm Brady LI501: Online Teaching DCU, 11 January 2012
Two (+1) initiatives • Twitter forum for MBA year 1 strategy case discussion • Skype presentation to MBA year 1 class from lecturer abroad • (online excel lab for IS101: BBS Year 1 students
Twitter forum • Plus • Low risk medium: may increase interaction • Seek tweets from year 2 MBAs/ graduates • Students unable to attend in person can participate • Minus • Public forum • Not all will be subscribed to / comfortable using Twitter • Interesting • New technology and new medium • for me, and for some of the students
Skype • Plus • Students can hear from guest speaker from abroad • Low cost: no travel expenses, low time commitment from guest speaker • Minus • Dependent on technology working well • Backup topic will be needed • Guest must be comfortable with Skype technology • Interesting • Another dimension to the class • DCU seen to be embracing new technology for educational purposes
Online lab • Plus • Students can take lab in their own time • Students can review lab as often as they wish • Minus • Considerable time investment may be required to develop the lab • Result may look amateurish • Interesting • For myself: will learn new skill • As group head: will understand how the lab system works
