  3. Messages

  4. Nonverbal behavior as Cues Innate (biological) behaviors can take on cultural meanings when we learn it is appropriate or inappropriate to act in certain ways. Facial expressions of anger, disgust, happiness, fear, sadness, and surprise are recognizable across cultures. Later, a 7th emotion was added contempt (107).

  5. Nonverbal Communication As Intentional Communication Nonverbal communication occurs when a non-spoken symbol is used to convey a specific message.

  6. Others define NV as those actions and attributes of humans that have socially shared meaning, are intentionally sent or interpreted as intentional, are consciously sent or consciously received, and have the potential for feedback from the receiver ( 109). A broader definition includes the use of environment, such as décor and color or feng

  7. Intentional Communication: Nonverbal Functions • Replacing spoken messages • Sending uncomfortable messages • Forming impressions that guide communication • Making relationships clear • Regulating interaction • Reinforcing and modifying verbal messages

  8. Nonverbal communication as a barrier • While we know there are certain nonverbal “universals” it is dangerous to assume that what a gesture or look means in our culture will mean the same in another culture. • The meaning of nonverbal communication varies from culture to culture.
