Family: group of people who are related by marriage, blood, or adoption and who often live together and share economic resources • Nuclear family: consists of one or both parents and their children, most common family in America
An individual’s family orientation is the nuclear family into which the person is born or adopted. When an individual marries, a new nuclear family is now a family or procreation, consisting of the individual, their spouse, and their children. • Extended family: larger family group, 2 or more generations.
Kinship: network of people who are related by marriage, birth, or adoption. • Primary: closest relatives (mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, daughter, and son) • Secondary: primary relatives of primary relatives (grandparents/children, aunts, uncles, etc.) • Tertiary: secondary relatives of primary relatives (great-grandparents/children, cousins, etc.)
Trends in American Family Life • Delayed Marriage and Childbearing: Young people are delaying marriage and having children as they are prioritizing education and launching their careers. • Childlessness: more couples are voluntarily childless, this allows for freedom, financial security, and the opportunity to spend time together.
Dual-Earner Marriages: Majority of families no longer live of just one salary. • One-Parent: formed through separation, divorce, death, adoptions. Accounts for about 25% of American families • Remarriage: 43% of marriages include a spouse encountering their second marriage
