GPA in Teacher Preparation Should the standard be raised?
Placement Challenges Students with low GPA and low math grades will take 4-5 attempts to find a placement. The following districts only accept students with 3.0 or better: • Yorktown • Del-Com • NW Allen • SW Allen • Beech Grove • All Hamilton County districts except PDS sites • Most PDS sites now consider GPA and take only the highest
Student Population at the DP2 Level • Percent of students with GPA below 2.5 ranges from 17-19% • Percent of students with GPA between 2.5 and 2.75 ranges from 14-16% • Percent of students with GPA at 2.75 or above ranges from 66-70% These numbers are relatively constant over time. Some programs may show slightly higher or lower percentages.
Current Students at DP2 Level • Students with GPA below 2.5: • Those with 45-48 hours (n=117) have an average GPA of 2.116 • Those with 90-93 hours (n=37) have an average GPA of 2.304 • Students with GPA between 2.5 and 2.75: • Those with 45-48 hours (n=73) have an average GPA of 2.622 • Those with 90-93 hours (n=38) have an average GPA of 2.599
Pros/Cons of Raising GPA Standard • Higher standards/Possible grade inflation • Smaller class size/Risk of low enrolled classes • Program status/Risk of being perceived as elitist • Stronger student profiles increasing likelihood of placements in student teaching and employment • Service to students through communication of realistic, current market expectations/Disappointing students who want to be teachers but don’t have high enough GPA
