  3. “What am I?” • I don’t have _______, but I do have _____. • Fill in the blanks to make this true for yourself. Then write a paragraph persuading me to believe your statement.

  5. Quick reflection • Think of something you tried to persuade a parent, teacher, or friend to do or believe. It might have been to buy or pay for something, to change a due date or a grade, to change a rule or decision, to go somewhere, or some other issue. What kinds of arguments did you use? Did you use logic? Did you use evidence to support your request? Did you try to present your own character in a way that would make your case more believable? Write a description of your efforts

Group Skit • In your group, discuss the strategies your friends use when they are trying to borrow a car, buy new clothes, or take an non-chaperoned trip. • Pick one of the situations and write a short skit showing those persuasive strategies in action. • Each skit must employ logical, emotional, and ethical persuasion. All members must actively participate. • Rehearse your skit. You may use a script.

  7. Reflection of Skits • Do people use Aristotle’s concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos every day, without thinking about it? Explain your answer. • Do these concepts apply to politics and advertising as well as person-to-person persuasion? Explain your answer. • What are other means of persuasion that Aristotle did not discuss? Why are they just as important?

  8. Survey the text • Where and when was this article published? • Who wrote the article? Do you know anything about this writer? How could you find out more? • What is the subtitle of the article? What does that tell you about what the article might say? • The article was published on the editorial page. What does that mean?

Making Predictions. • What does it mean to have a change of heart? • What are some common ideas or feelings people have about animals? • What kinds of things might cause someone to change his or her ideas or feelings about animals? • What are some groups of people who have strong feelings about how animals are treated? What do you know about them? What do they usually believe?

  10. What is a vegetarian or a vegan? Do you know anyone who is a vegetarian? Why did he/she become a vegetarian? • This article appeared in a newspaper. What does that mean about the audience? Is this an article for scientists? Explain. • What do you think is the purpose of this article? Does the writer want readers to change their minds about something? Explain. • Will the article be negative or positive? Explain. • What argument about the topic might it present? Prove it. • Turn the title into a question to answer after you have read the text.

  14. Word Choice & Sentence Structure • What are the denotative and connotative meanings of key words? How do the specific words the author choose affect your response? • What words or synonyms are repeated? Why? • What figurative language does the author use? What does it imply? • Is the sentence structure varied? • What effects do choices of sentence structure and length have on the reader?

  15. Other questions • How would you describe the style of this article? Is it formal? Informal? Academic? Scientific? Conversational? • What is the effect of giving names of most of the animals involved in the experiments, but not the names of the scientists? • Throughout most of the article Rifkin refers to unnamed researchers and scientists but in paragraph 13 he directly quotes Stephen M. Siviy. What is the effect of this sudden specificity? • What is the effect of all the rhetorical questions in paragraph 15, followed by “Such questions being raised” in the next paragraph?

Structure & Descriptive Outlining of the Text • Draw a line where the introduction ends. • Divide the body of the essay into sections based on topics. • Draw a line where the conclusion begins. • Write brief statements describing the rhetorical function and content of each paragraph or section. What does each section do for the reader? What does each section say?
