  1. Teacher IntroductionMiss BabineauHighlands Elementary School I created this webquest for my fifth grade students. I wanted to integrate reading and science so that they could apply their background knowledge about animals and ecosystems while trying to complete the task. Furthermore, I wanted to promote higher level thinking in a way that was fun and engaging for all students!

  2. Introduction MR. OCAX Poppy and Lungwort need your help! They are trapped in Dimwood Forest with that mean owl Mr. Ocax, who thinks he is the ruler of everything and everyone! They better be careful because if they get him upset, they will surely be eaten. (JUST LIKE RAGWEED!) Not only do they have to watch out for Mr. Ocax, but they must be on the lookout for the many porcupines looking for scrumptious mice to eat. Hurry! Poppy and Lungwort need your help desperately! While they are on their mission, they will meet many new animals that they have never seen before. Lungwort and Poppy know NOTHING about other animals, and it is your job to help them learn! POPPY & LUNGWORT

  3. Task • Your teacher will assign you to a group of two. Each member of your group will conduct research to find out more about the predators and prey relationship. Based on your research, you will do the following: 1. You will create a crossword puzzle and/or word search to demonstrate your understanding of the predator and prey relationships that exist in your world. • create a food chain or food web diagram to demonstrate (show) where the characters in the story and your animal that you researched would belong based on their species. (This can be created on the computer using Microsoft Word or on a separate sheet of paper)

  4. Process 1. First, you must think about the main characters in the story. Mr. Ocax is an owl, and Poppy and Lungwort are mice. You must now do research to find out if your animal is a predator or prey to owls and mice. For example, if you are researching squirrels, you can search for do owls prey on squirrels? See what happens by clicking on the links below. http://www.kids.yahoo.com http://www.google.com http://www.yahoo.com www.awesomelibrary.com http://www.askforkids.com 2. Finally, demonstrate your understanding of the key terms by creating a crossword puzzle, word search, and/or word scramble. It doesn’t matter what you decide-just be sure to spell words correctly! http://www.crosswordpuzzlegames.com/create.html http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com http://www.armoredpenguin.com/wordscramble 2. Next, click on the following link to find pictures of the following animals: Owl, mice, and of course, your animal! (You may use these to create your food chain!) http://school.discoveryeducation.com/schrockguide/

  5. EvaluationThe rubric below will be used to evaluate the food chain that you created to show the predator/prey relationship. The scale for the rubric is from 1 to 4. A number four indicates having the highest score and will receive the best grade in each category. The number one  indicates a poor performance. Each group should strive for 4's in each category.

  6. EvaluationThe rubric below will be used to evaluate the ecosystem that you created to show the predator/prey relationship. The scale for the rubric is from 1 to 4. A number four indicates having the highest score and will receive the best grade in each category. The number one  indicates a poor performance. Each group should strive for 4's in each category.

  7. Conclusion Congratulations! Because of your hard work and outstanding research, Poppy and Lungwort have a better chance of surviving in their ecosystem! Even though they will always have to worry about predators on the lookout for them, they are way more prepared than they were before you stepped in. Our class has learned about how every animal can be considered both a predator and a prey. All animals are dependent on their environment in order to survive. Regardless of where there ecosystem is, they must be able to find their basic needs. The fact that Mr. Ocax is a cruel ruler doesn’t matter anymore! Poppy and Lungwort are now going to make it on their own and won’t live in fear of any loose porcupines. Great job fifth graders!! All of you hard work certainly paid off! 8. Credits I want to thank Professor Greenberg for assigning this project. This enabled me to enhance my teaching and promote higher level thinking in my classroom in a way that is fun and interactive for all learners.
