  1. Introduction to Ecosystems

  2. Ecology Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their environment Eco = house or were someone lives Logy = study

  3. Organism Living creature - single individual (Dory is a Regal Blue Tang)

  4. Organisms of the same species that live in the same place (Many Regal Blue Tangs) Population

  5. The place where the organism lives (Pond) Habitat

  6. Population + Habitat (Regal Blue Tangs in the Pond) Different populations living in the same area Community

  7. Collection of organisms that live together and their non living (abiotic) environment. The physical environment (Regal Blue Tangs, Algae, Pond…) Ecosystem

  8. What is in your ecosystem? • Biotic Factors • Anything living or comes from a living thing • Ex: Animals, Plants, microorganisms, waste • Abiotic Factors • Anything nonliving • Ex: Rocks, Oxygen, Water, Sunlight

  9. Healthy ecosystems Diversity Measure of the number of species living there More diverse = More Stable the environment Every animal has a specific role (Niche)

  10. Unhealthy Ecosystems • Little or no diversity • Ecosystem is more susceptible to diseases • No organisms left to use or appreciate

  11. Biosphere • A collection of ecosystems • Total amount of matter stays the same over time…it is transformed/reused
