What Makes Up an Ecosystem? • An ecosystem includes all the living and nonliving things in a particular area. • Living – plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, etc. • Nonliving – soil, gravel, sunlight, temperature, nutrients, water, air, etc. • Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with one another and with the nonliving factors in their environment.

  4. What Makes Up an Ecosystem? • An organism’s habitat is the physical place where it lives. It is usually a small part of an ecosystem. • A niche is an organism’s role within an ecosystem. The niche includes an organism’s use of the living and nonliving resources in the ecosystem. • Because organisms have many different niches, many different species can exist together.

  5. What Makes Up an Ecosystem? • A population consists of all the members of the same species that live together in the same area at the same time. • A community includes all the populations that live together in an area. • A terrarium is a closed glass or plastic container where organisms can live and be observed.
