  1. ECOSYSTEMS

  2. ECOLOGY • Study of the interactions of living organisms with one another & their physical environment HABITAT • Place where a population of species lives

  3. COMMUNITY • Many different species that live in the same habitat ECOSYSTEM • Consists of a community and all of the physical parts of the habitat

  4. TEMPERATE FOREST ECOSYSTEM

  5. CROWFOOT MT. ECOSYSTEM, ALBERTA CANADA

  6. SUCCESSION • Natural, orderly process in the community of an ecosystem • characterized by population growth and reduction

  7. 2 TYPES OF SUCCESSION Primary Succession • Succession that occurs where plants have not grown before • Ex: receding glaciers Secondary Succession • Occurs in areas where there has been previous growth • Ex: forest fire, flood, drought, deforestation

  8. Pictures of Primary Succession • 1875 2004

  9. More primary succession

  10. Pictures of Secondary Succession • Tropical storm Mount Etna, Andrea Italy

  11. More secondary succession • Deforestation in * Japan tsunami Amazon Rainforest

  12. CLIMAX COMMUNITY • When succession slows down • A stable mature community that undergoes little to no succession

  13. Pioneer species the first organism to appear in an area undergoing succession • Ex: bacteria, moss, lichens

  14. Autotroph/producer- organism that makes its own food (plants) • Heterotroph/consumer- organism that eats other things (animals)

  15. Food Chains • Possible route for the transfer of matter & energy through an ecosystem from autotrophs to heterotrophs to decomposers • Herbivores- eat plants

  16. Omnivores- eat plants & animals • Carnivore- eats animals • Decomposer- eats decaying material • Scavenger- eats dead organisms, leftovers

  17. Food chains cont..

  18. FOOD WEBS • Shows all the possible feeding relationships in a community, interconnected food chains

  19. Autotrophs/producers have the highest biomass, energy, and populations • Top carnivores have the least biomass, energy, and populations

  20. Biomass • The total dry organic matter or stored energy content of living organisms that is present at a specific time
