PC: abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, PR bleed, malaena, haematemesis, weight loss, abdominal distension, abdominal bloating, vomiting. • Remember SOCRATES when inquiring about pain: • Site • Onset • Character • Radiation • Associated symptoms • Timing and duration • Exacerbating/Relieving symptoms • Severity

Causes of abdominal pain • Right iliac fossa: Appendicitis, Crohn’s disease, Renal colic • Left iliac fossa: Sigmoid diverticulitis, Colorectal cancer, Renal colic • Right upper quadrant: Gallstones, Cholecystitis, Hepatitis • Left upper quadrant: Pancreatitis, splenic rupture • Epigastric: Pancreatitis, Gastric/Duodenal ulcer, Atypical MI, GORD

  4. Past medical/surgical history: Any medical conditions, previous admissions, previous surgery, previous endoscopies and findings • Drug history: any medications, drug allergies • Family history: Inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, inherited family disorders • Social history: Smoking, alcohol, recent travel history • DON’T FORGET ICE!!
