  2. The Beginning (1848-1849) Kailee Gaither

  3. Key People • James W. Marshall- Marshall began work building a sawmill in Sacramento Valley. Marshall then discovered gold at the sawmill he was building. • Henry Bigler- Bigler was near the site when the gold was discovered in California. He was one of the very first people to note the discovery of gold. • Charles H. Bennett- Bennett was in present when the gold was first discovered. He knew he had to keep the discovery a secret between a few men. James w. Marshall

Events That Led Up To The Gold Rush • Many rumors of gold in California had spread. • Sutter, the one who hired Marshall to build his sawmill, was granted 50,000 acres in the Sacramento Valley. • Marshall discovered gold at the site of the sawmill and Sutter and Marshall attempted to keep it a secret. • Word of the discovery of gold got out and it became national news very quickly.

  5. What Was Life Like Before The Gold Rush Began? • Many Mexicans had been living in California at the time gold was discovered. • Many immigrants had been shipped in around the time.

  6. Where Did It Happen? • The gold was discovered in Sutter’s Fort, which was in Sacramento Valley, which was located in California. The sawmill where gold was first discovered built by Marshall

  14. End Historian • The gold rush brought economic prosperity to California. Farms ranch's, stores restaurants and other business. • Its necessity because the firms all complete for the top 10% from a hand fill of school. • The California gold rush of 1849 brought large numbers of American Citizens and new immigrants from Europe to California.
