  2. History • 9/11/01 – Army requires security clearance for access to Dugway Proving Grounds • 12/14/01 – LANL asked to help HiRes • 4/1/02 – LANL/Utah agreement finalized • 5/1/02 – LANL takes first HiRes shift • 6/6/02 – HiRes I remote operations begin Gus Sinnis

  3. Operational Experience • LANL/Utah/Columbia interactions smooth • Learning curve fairly swift • HiRes II straightforward to run • Troubleshooting requires experts • Monitoring software needs some work • Shifts now running 14 hours Gus Sinnis

  4. Operational Experience • No LANL staff are dedicated to project • Other tasks get priority • LANL is over subscribed with tasks • Scheduling is becoming difficult • Need to have dedicated people at LANL • Postdocs • Technician ½ time Gus Sinnis

  5. LANL Overview • LANL Tax Rates • G&A 38% (28% for HiRes, offsite) • Group Tax 69% (Pays space tax) • Division Tax 19% • Postdocs pay only Division Tax • G&A money pays no G&A tax • Net Tax Rate: 139% (19% for postdoc) Gus Sinnis

  6. LANL Overview • Cost to operate HiRes • $8k /TSM/week • $2k /postdoc/week • Funding postdocs is cost effective Gus Sinnis

  7. LANL Contributions • FY02 • 15k from Division (no taxes) to manage funds • 80k from LDRD (87% tax rate) • FY03 • 24k from Division • manage funds/participate in collaboration • Working with Bill Press, Division, and Group Gus Sinnis

  8. LANL Future in HiRes • LANL very supportive of our work • 4 staff now collaboration members • Are looking for funds for a postdoc • Would like to be involved in science • Postdoc at LANL • LDRD funds for staff to participate • Need postdocs for long-term operations Gus Sinnis
