  4. Start with an introduction Hook + thesis+ preview of paper’s content= intro Hook: 1st line that grabs the readers attention Thesis: topic sentence of the paper: clearly states the purpose of the paper Preview: Do not tell me hard facts, allude to the good stuff to come

  5. Hooks • An interesting fact • An anomaly/ something unexpected • Paint a picture • DO NOT ASK A QUESTION! • Ex: With an income of less than $30,000 annually some might question how waitressing could be a fulfilling career. Waitressing not only brings in supplemental tips, it also works around a flexible schedule, unlike most other jobs. • Rescuing the cries for help, nursing the broken body, and rejuvenating the injured spirit are all duties of an emergency medical technician (EMT) and an emergency room trauma nurse practitioner (PA).

  6. Thesis • Clearly state the purpose of the paper • Do not say • The purpose of this essay is to… • In this paper the reader will… • An informative comparison between tow truck driver and book store manager is presented in the following pages

  7. Thesis • Do say: • An analysis of the college admission process reveals one challenge facing counselors: accepting students with high test scores or students with strong extracurricular backgrounds (OWL). • The life of the typical college student is characterized by time spent studying, attending class, and socializing with peers (OWL). • An ideal job provides acceptable wages, regularly scheduled hours, and the excitement of a new challenge everyday. Both a botanist and a florist provide these desired traits and present the potential for career fulfillment. • Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence (OWL). • Your greatest challenge will involve creating a combined thesis statement that includes both careers in the paper.

  8. Your body… • Do not mix career info: • A mechanic works for hourly wages, but a neurophysicist works on an annual salary. However, a mechanic can wear jeans and boots to work and does not risk accidentally poking something important inside of someone’s exposed cranium, while this is the stress of a neurophysicist everyday! • Wow, that’s choppy!

  9. Your body continued… • Transition- from intro to career 1 • Career 1 • Major Transition – from career 1 to 2 • Career 2 • Conclusion

  10. The body… • Your answers must be • 1) specific • 2) include examples to help the reader understand • Write this paper as if the reader has no idea what the career is or how to enter it> you are the expert! • Do not say: • Ex: To enter this career a future athletic trainer must undergo training. WHAT KIND? HOW MUCH? WHEN? WHY? HOW? HOW MUCH? WHERE CAN HE OBTAIN THE TRAINING?

  11. STUDENT WHO OBTAINED 0% ON AN EXAM • I would have given him 100% • Q1. In which battle did Napoleon die? * his last battle • Q2. Where was the Declaration of Independence signed? * at the bottom of the page • Q3. River Ravi flows in which state? * liquid • Q4. What is the main reason for divorce? * marriage • Q5. What is the main reason for failure? * exams • Q6. What can you never eat for breakfast? * Lunch & dinner • Q7. What looks like half an apple? * The other half • Q8. If you throw a red stone into the blue sea what it will become? * It will simply become wet • Q9. How can a man go eight days without sleeping ? * No problem, he sleeps at night. • Q10. How can you lift an elephant with one hand? * You will never find an elephant that has only one hand.. • Q11. If you had three apples and four oranges in one hand and four apples and three oranges in other hand, what would you have ? * Very large hands • Q12. If it took eight men ten hours to build a wall, how long would it take four men to build it? * No time at all, the wall is already built. • Q13. How can u drop a raw egg onto a concrete floor without cracking it? *Any way you want, concrete floors are very hard to crack.

  13. Transitions • Pesky words, phrases, and sentences that connect one idea to the next. For the time being, do your best. • We will learn/ discuss these rascals later • FYI: consequently, clearly, then, furthermore additionally and in addition moreover because besides that in the same way following this further also pursuing this further in the light of the... it is easy to see that

  16. Oh yeah! What’s an outline? • An organizational tool to help guide you through your paper. • This paper requires lots of information- an outline will help you keep your ideas straight, AND • It will help you to remember all the required information and include it in your paper

  17. Helpful Hints • Your career is not capitalized • doctor, lawyer, teacher, nurse, Toyo heater technician • If you need to abbreviate write it out first, then place the acronym in parenthesis • emergency medical technician (EMT) • Parenthetical citations go inside the end mark • Tattoo artists make per diem (AKCIS). • If you cite multiple resources: (AKCIS; Ferguson) • Excessive citing is better than under-citing • Use formal writing rules
