  1. Uganda after Kony [teachers’ notes beneath each slide]

  2. "I was alone when I heard the gun shots, the children were playing with friends, so I ran to find the children. Everyone was running for their lives.”When we realised our home was no longer safe, we carried our children and walked to a place that we thought was safer and we had to stay there. In those hills where we went, life became so difficult for us ... we longed so much to return to our place, to come and cultivate our land.”

  3. Your task: Giriki has a new primary school, built with support from ActionAid. The school has classrooms, furniture and toilets. You are a group of parents involved in running the school. How will you encourage other parents to send their children to the school? Make a list of all the services you could provide. How will you make these sustainable in the long term? You have a limited budget and can only prioritisethree things from your list. What will you choose and why? Present and explain your decisions to the class. “It is the responsibility of everyone in our community to make sure that all our children get the education they need.” Alfred Kityo, teacher
