  3. 4th Grade Curriculum • Common Core: • http://www.pta.org/4thgradefeb4.pdf • http://www.corestandards.org/ • http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/acre/standards/common-core/ • Science – Landforms, Animal Habitats, Electricity and Magnetism, Rocks and Minerals • Social Studies –North Carolina History, Government, Economy, Culture, Geography, and Environmental Literacy .

Writing: Narratives (personal and imaginative), Opinion, Research (Informative) • Spelling: Bi-weekly, Vocabulary (starting 2nd quarter) • Math: Place Value, Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction, Multi-Digit Multiplication and Division, Geometric shapes, Fractions and Decimals, and Measurement and Data

Reading -Daily 6, Focus Lessons, and Guided Reading, Writing Conferences, One on One intervention. • Daily 6 (work chart) • Read to self • Read to someone • Writing • Word Work • Listen to Reading • Skill Work • “The Daily 6 - is more than a management system or a curriculum framework - it is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.”

  6. Café • Comprehension • Accuracy • Fluency • Expanded Vocabulary “Daily 5 is how we schedule our language block. CAFÉ is what we study during this time. CAFÉ is an acronym for the four major components of reading. The children will learn reading strategies within each category. These strategies will become tools for the children to use to help themselves become better readers and writers. I will keep you informed when new strategies are introduced. Then, when you read with your child at home, you will be able to reinforce these concepts.” –www.thedailycafe.com

  7. What do Levels 1 to 4 mean? Refer to Handout… The student performance levels of 1 to 4 indicate whether students have met the expectations set by the state in the Standard Course of Study and indicate whether the student has the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in the next quarter or next grade. Grades are provided twice a year for weekly special classes such as art and music, instead of quarterly. • Level 4 - Extends targeted grade level standards • Level 3 - Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standard • Level 2 - Inconsistent and needs support to meet targeted grade level standards • Level 1 - Insufficient performance of targeted grade level standards with support

How can students receive a level 4? • Teachers will provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding and will provide rubrics that describe Level 4 performance in reading, writing, and mathematics on the assessment cards. Teachers may begin providing Level 4 opportunities by: • • Reading – teaching grade level objectives with texts that have a higher • degree of difficulty without teacher support. Observing the students’ ability • to apply and extend the reading objectives before, during, and after • reading without teacher support. • • Writing – providing unassisted writing assignments where ideas are • focused, organized, have logical progression, include specific details that • support the topic, use more purposeful and precise vocabulary and • include sentence fluency. • • Math – giving students problems where they justify and elaborate their • responses and strategies; providing more challenging situations/problems • beyond typical proficiency. • • Science – providing inquiry-based activities that are open-ended and allow • students to demonstrate problem-solving, critical thinking and analysis of • data.

  11. Snack- We have a late lunch this year, so your child will have a snack break every morning. I encourage your child to bring a healthy snack such as fruits, vegetables, crackers, yogurt, cheese or pretzels.

  14. Homework Policy • We go over homework the next day and we correct it. Students may ask questions at this time about any missed answers. • Homework is not graded but homework completion is part of the report card. • If your child cannot complete the homework, because they do not understand it, please put a note on the paper, skip that particular problem and complete the rest.
