  5. FedEx Weather Services Air Operations Division

  6. Mission Provide the most accurate weather forecasts and briefings for North American and Caribbean operations. The Meteorology department also provides the timeliest technical meteorological data to support international flight operations. Through continuous efforts to support customer alignment in support of quality, the Meteorology department helps to ensure FedEx remains the safest, most reliable and cost-efficient air transportation system in the world.

Fast Facts • Department started in 1986 • Operates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week • Located within Global Operations Control, which is the department’s primary customer • Staff of 15: 10 Operational / 5 Administrative • Approved by FAA as primary source of forecasts for all domestic trunk flights and some international flights • Enhanced Weather Information Services (EWINS) certified

  9. Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts • Issue TAFS two to three times daily for 45 domestic airports with valid times of 16-27 hours and by exception for other locations • A few international TAFS also issued, some seasonally (New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore) • Additional forecasts as needed by customers

Responsibilities • Issue SNOCON/Winter Weather Advisories for Memphis, Newark, and Indianapolis hubs • Coordinate air operations with FedEx Air Traffic Control group • ATC forecast for evening inbound push • Mountain Wave Turbulence forecast for China routes • Forecast temperature, wind, and altimeter settings for hubs and high-altitude ramps (aircraft performance) • Daily weather outlook for use by Sales/Life Sciences in shipment of time-sensitive, high-value products

  11. Responsibilities • Expert advice offered within company, including: • daily weather briefings to aircraft dispatchers in GOC • briefings to flight crews, as necessary • guidance on en-route hazardous weather conditions (i.e., icing, turbulence, thunderstorms, volcanic ash, space weather) • other meteorological conditions that may affect corporate operations (tropical contingencies, winter weather, land-based flooding, etc.) • Provide custom products for all FedEx OpCo’s • Inter- and intra-departmental training • Involvement in industry workgroups

  12. SNOCONS • Issued for MEM, IND, EWR hubs • Issued when winter wx (snow, ice) is expected at a hub within 48 hours • Brief description of type of event, onset, duration, and expected significance

  13. Hurricane Contingencies • Process initiated by Met Dept with an alert of storm formation • Regular/ad-hoc strategic and tactical conference calls • Decisions on relief supplies and staffing • 24 hours: evacuate and suspend service • GOC calls continue until system is restored

WINDS website • Primary source of weather information for FDX Corporation. • Displays all pertinent weather data (obs, radar, satellite, model data, SIGMETS, PIREPS, etc.) in graphical and/or textual formats • Available on corporate intranet – Keyword: “weather” or at weather.fedex.com • National Weather Service and Meteostar/Sutron are data providers • FDX/Meteostar servers process all incoming data for display in WINDS
