  1. Unit 4 Poetry Vocab English 11

  2. Alliteration • The repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables • Ex: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…

  3. Rhyme Scheme • The arrangement of end rhymes in a stanza or poem Twinkle, twinkle, little star A How I wonder what you are A Up above the world so high B Like a diamond in the sky B

  4. Internal Rhyme • Rhyme between a word within a line and another either at the end of the same line or within another line • (Example on next slide)

  5. Example from “The Raven” But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour. Nothing further that he uttered – not a feather did he fluttered– Till I scarcely more than muttered “Other friends have flown before – On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.” Then the bird said “Nevermore.”

  6. End Rhyme • Rhyme that occurs at the last syllables of verses • Ex (from “The Raven”): “Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.”

  7. Assonance • The repetition of the sound of the vowel in non-rhyming or stressed syllables • Ex (from “The Raven”): “Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore.”

  8. Stanza • A group of lines forming the basic recurring metrical unit in a poem • Instead of calling these groups of lines a paragraph, we use the term stanza in poetry.

  9. Tone • What the speaker or narrator feels towards the subject, rather than what the reader feels (mood) • Ex: What do you think is the tone of “The Pit and the Pendulum?” (Remember this is the narrator’s view.) • Possible answers: serious, dark, feverish, urgent, philosophical, etc.

  10. Diction • The author’s choice and use of words and phrases in speech or writing • How does Poe’s use of diction in “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Raven” have an effect on these two pieces?
