  1. Wave Behavior SWBAT explain how waves can reflect from some surfaces; explain how waves change direction when they move from one material into another; describe how waves are able to bend around barriers.

  2. Reflection Reflections when a waves strikes an object or surface and bounces off. What type of surface is best for reflections? Smooth and even surfaces create better reflections because the light is reflected in the same direction. In your lab notebooks, explain how waves are reflected in your own words.

  3. Refraction Refraction the bending of a wave as it moves from one medium to another. What causes refraction? The speed of a wave changes as it enters a new material. Why do the colors of the rainbow occur in the order they do? Light rays refract as they enter and leave water droplets. Each color refracts at different angles because of their different wavelengths, separating them into the colors in the visible spectrum. In your lab notebook explain refraction in your own word.

  4. Flip the page in your notebook Title: Observing how Light Refracts Looking directly down at into the cup from above, observe the straw where it meets the water. Using complete sentences describe how it appears. Now place yourself so that the straw is angled to the left and back away about a meter. Observe how the straw appears above, at, and below the water’s surface. In complete sentences describe your observations. Why was there a difference?

  5. Diffraction Diffraction the bending of waves around a barrier. Where are places you might observe diffraction happening? Beach – waves diffract around barriers in the water Bank Room – sound waves bend and can be heard from afar In your lab notebook describe diffraction in your own words.

  6. What happens when waves meet? What happens when waves meet? Waves can pass through each other and keep moving. They are not made of matter, so they do not bump into each other. Interference the ability of two waves to combine and form a new wave when they overlap.

  7. Destructive vs. Constructive Waves What is destructive and constructive interference? Destructive A crest and a trough would overlap If they have the same amplitude, they cancel each other out Constructive A crest and a crest would overlap They create a larger wave while they overlap

  8. Applying Science Using the given SmartPal and markers see if your group can accomplish the following: Create the graph of a wave that will eliminate wave A, but not wave B Create the graph of a wave that would amplify wave A

  9. In your groups Complete problems 1-5, on page 243 Answer all questions in complete sentences, restating the question in your response. Finish for homework.
