Background • UM CBDE began in 1935, current model in 2000 • No RWJ funds; initial State/Medicaid grant • Michigan has adult Medicaid dental benefits • Current class size: 110 students • D4 students rotate 10 weeks – usually 2 week intervals – moving to D3s for 2 weeks • 30 D4 students out /wk., 1-3 students/site • Most clinics contract for students 36-40 wks./yr. • School pays for transportation and housing

  4. Staffing • Assistant Dean for CBDE (.9 FTE) • Adjunct Professor (.6 FTE) • QA and faculty development • Support staff (2 FTE)

  5. Practice Types • Federally Qualified Health Clinics (9) • Clinics receive $25,000/student from State Medicaid • School receives $36,000/student/yr • Lost student income/day at School: $165

  6. Practice Types • Community Health Clinics (9) • Some managed by MCDC (6) – 501(c)3 • School receives $95/day + 5% production • Averaging $125/day • Indian Health (2) • School receives $36,000/student/yr • No state payment to clinics

Practice Type • Private practice model (1) • Practice takes Medicaid, charges predoc fees • School receives $165 day/student • No housing/transportation expenses • Other - no income • Community college assisting program • Dental school owned local clinic • Local charity clinic • Correctional facilities • Event clinics
