  1. YEAR 9 OPTIONS 13/14This is only the beginning…

  2. AIMS • To emphasise the importance of making the right choices at the end of Year 9 • To provide students and parents with an overview of the process and the constraints which can affect choices • To build a successful three way partnership between the student, parents and school • To inform parents on how to access the website • To clarify the next steps

  3. CHOICES AVAILABLE • Each student has to study the following • English (4 Lessons per week) • Maths (4 Lessons per week)1 • Science (6 Lessons per week) • Core ICT (1 Lesson per week) becomes Personal Economics in Y11 • Core PE (2 Lessons per week) • Life skills (1 Lesson per week) (In Y10 this is RPE – possible ½ GCSE, in Y11 it is centred around future decision making and adult life) • 4 Option Subjects (3 Lessons each per week) • Some students will be entitled to opt for study support to replace one of the option subjects. This is for students who will find the extra time helpful in supporting their other subjects. These students will be identified by the school and parents will be informed of the recommendation. This course will also include a qualification in Functional Skills and Certificate of Personal Effectiveness.

  4. PICKING THE 4 OPTIONS • Each student should aim to pick a balanced selection of options. The best way of thinking about this is the following • One you Enjoy • One you are Good at • One for your current career ideas • One to keep a balance In addition you may want to think about the following… • Post 16 progression routes • Do you want to go on to one of the U.K’s top universities? • Do you want to achieve the EBAC? Are you able to? • This means gaining a C or above in English, Maths, 2 x Sciences (Applied Science/General Science does not count), a Language and a Humanities. • How is the course assessed • What are apprenticeships? • Education to 18

  5. OTHER CHOICES TO MAKE • Are you going to study triple science or double science? Do you need to discuss single science? • To study triple science ideally you will be working at Level 6 or above by the end of Year 9. • Core PE will allow some choice and may also carry and award or certificate. This will be sorted out later in the year through PE lessons. • What are going to be your 2 reserve subjects (in case the timetable does not fit)

  6. CONSTRAINTS • Students’ / Parents’ wishes are considered first. Ultimately this is the students decision. However… • Timetabling constraints / Numbers • Supporting advice (Enjoy, Achieve, Career, Balance and EBAC) • Subject teachers’ opinion – Y9 effort, suitability for course, behaviour. • Monitoring (First 3 weeks in September) • Not having access to the internet

  7. REASONS FOR BAD CHOICES • Picking an option because your friend is doing it. • Picking / not picking an option because you liked / disliked the teacher you had in Y9 • Listening to rumours • Not picking a subject because you have heard it is too hard / too much work • Picking a subject because people have said it’s a ‘soft option’ / ‘easy option’ (Non are!) • Putting all of your eggs in one basket!
